The Story Behind the Very First Hope Manning Memorial Scholarship

by: Denise Melton, Executive Director, Cumberland Children’s Center-House of Hope

This ornament hangs on my tree every year.

When I first became the director of the House of Hope in January of 2006, I let our founder Sheriff Butch Burgess know I would like to offer a Hope Manning Memorial Scholarship. Well Butch got right on it. He shared the idea with the Wood Carvers Club, and they made one hundred of these ornaments, all one of a kind, with a 2006 penny.

They raised $1,000 for our first scholarship. Because of community support we are now able to offer three scholarships for $1,000 to the three Cumberland County High Schools, and if the recipient goes for a second year, they will receive another $1,000.

The scholarships are given to students who have overcome hardships. We collect donations at our store Threads of Hope. So, when u see the donation jar donate there or you may also make an online donation because every penny counts and can make a difference.

Merry Christmas!!!
